IranianCommunity of Hull
In the last fifteen years there has been a considerable rise in the number of Iranian nationals who have settled in the UK. As with other immigrants, these new arrivals experience many challenges dealing with basic requirements once in Britain. Since ICOH’s establishment, we have delivered services and advice through the organisation to support new arrivals in establishing themselves in the UK. As the reputation of ICOH has grown, so too has the demand for help and advice. To meet this demand, the Newcomers Helpdesk was established as an advisory arm of ICOH. Newcomers Helpdesk is a 24/7 helpline with a network of 20 volunteers which primarily provides bespoke advisory services for Iranian newcomers. The Newcomers Helpdesk helps clients seeking support on different issues, including: form filling, interpreting assistance, GP registration, opening a bank account and securing educational placements. ICOH also makes referrals to the following organisations: Jobcentre Plus, Inland Revenues, Hull City Council and Housing, Citizen’s Advice Bureau as well as other charities, immigration organisations, private solicitors, the police and courts. Thanks to the Newcomers Helpdesk, many Iranian newcomers have received basic help and advice that they urgently need to meet their basic needs while settling into a new society. This service ultimately expedited their settlement into British society. The establishment of ICOH in 2013 coincided with increased reductions in public finance for immigrants. These cuts specifically targeted interpreting costs for new arrivals. Our network of volunteers has spent more than 200 hours interpreting jobs in 2014. The benefits of ICOH’s work in facilitating the settlement of newcomers is difficult to quantify. One similar charity, which is delivering the same services, claimed that each £1 invested in this area generates £15 of benefit to the broader community.
