Tackling Loneliness Project

IranianCommunity of Hull
Between March and August 2020, ICOH worked in partnership with Hull Museums on the ‘Life in Lockdown’ project. Our members were asked to submit experiences and memories of their time during the pandemic and first lockdown. ICOH facilitated the exchange by providing translation services and encouraging members to produce their own pieces of art (e.g. photography, video clips, paintings, poetry). Hull Museums then took these pieces and experiences to create a digital repository and collage to demonstrate shared experiences. ICOH members, who are mainly asylum seekers and were struggling with isolation and loneliness during the pandemic, responded positively and as a result we continued the project by 31 March 2021 with the aid of a small funding called Local Connection Fund Project from Department for Digital, Culture, Medica and Sport in Partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund. This time, ICOH worked independently curating the project, called ‘Tackling Loneliness’. In new project ICOH engaged 40 participants from across BAME communities, particularly asylum seeking people, not just the Iranian community, producing their own pieces of art and/or share memories through Zoom sessions which our translators turned into a written statement. We then hosted an online exhibition using our website www.icohorg.uk , to share these pieces and experiences across the community. Throughout this project we succeeded to illuminate shared experiences and demonstrated to our beneficiaries that other people are encountering similar difficulties as a result of the pandemic. The process gave beneficiaries an opportunity for social interaction (over Zoom or telephone conversations, depending on their technology access) and a creative outlet, which we hoped that decreased their feelings of isolation and boredom while improve their IT skills required for working with remote communication platforms.
