To
promote
community
cohesion,
reduce
isolation
and
meet
the
emotional
needs
of
Iranian
newcomers,
a
number
of
recreational
and
cultural
events
including:
Iranian
New
Year
ceremonies,
gathering
to
watch
national
sports
events,
fun
days
out,
lunch
clubs,
BBQs,
camping
and
Christmas
parties
have
been
organised.
By
running
these
events,
ICOH
provides
its
beneficiaries
with
access
to
recreational
activates
designed
to
alleviate
boredom
and
isolation.
Considering
the
complex
lives
of
many
newcomers
the
importance
of
fun
should
not
be
downplayed.
Furthermore
these
events
contribute
to
the
reduction
of
potential
crime,
anti-
social behaviour, pressure on mental health services and builds tolerance and understanding of the country they now reside in.
These
events
contribute
considerably
to
social
cohesion
among
our
beneficiaries
and
the
wider
local
community,
facilitating
integration
and
acceptance.
The
Iranian
community
is
deeply
divided
by
culture,
religion
and
politics.
These
events
help
members
of
the
Iranian
community
overcome
these
cultural
barriers
and
form
relationships
with
individuals
from
different
backgrounds
who
hold
different
opinions
and
beliefs.
One
of
the
most
important
achievements
that
resulted
from
these
events
was
that
ICOH
managed
to
integrate
members
of
minority
religions
and
ethnic
communities
into
the
mainstream
Iranian
community.
Another
achievement
of
these
events
was
to
bring
single
people
together
with
families
in
one
event,
previously
individuals
were
not
allowed
to
attend
ceremonies
where
families
were
present.
Events
run
by
ICOH
were
also
successful
at
reducing
gender
segregation
which
remains
common
even
upon
relocating
to
the
United
Kingdom
and
which
hinders
successful
integration
with
the
wider
community.
Across
several
events
run
by
ICOH
more
than
300
Iranians
and
30
other
nationalities
attended.
Attendees
reported
that
they
had
fun
and
felt
relaxed
after
attending
the
events.
Non-Iranian
attendants
were
also
very satisfied with the activities and admired the culture and hospitality of Iranians.
