Commemoration of Centenary of the First World War

IranianCommunity of Hull
Unforgotten Soldiers, Colonial Troops in the First World War Project Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). With the aid of funding from HLF, ICOH organised a citywide project to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. ICOH sought to improve the knowledge of the general public of the bravery and sacrifice of colonial troops participating in WWI by engaging the resident ethnic communities, whose backgrounds are similar to the colonial troops, and involving them in a project aimed at identifying and displaying this unrecognised area of history to the wider public. The Stories behind the Pictures: Colonial Troops and Chinese Labourers in the First World War Project funded by AHRC First World War Engagement Centres in partnership with University of Leeds. This project worked with different ethnic communities within Hull to investigate some of the stories behind the images of colonial troops serving in the First World War. The project asked why these pictures were produced, who their intended audiences were and how we could interpret them from a modern perspective. By using participatory action research, the project engaged and empowered marginalised ethnic communities, increased participation in heritage activities and brought different parts of the community together.
