Together Eveyone Accomplishes More
.
Unforgotten Soldirs, Colonial Troops in the WWI
ICOH,
with
the
aid
of
funding
from
the
Heritage
Lottery
Fund
(HLF),
organised
a
citywide
project
to
commemorate
the
centenary
of
the
First
World
War.
The
project
aimed
to
unearth
the
stories
of
the
brave
sacrifices
made
by
men
from
colonial
countries in WWI.
This
project
was
designed
to
help
members
of
Hull's
ethnic
communities
to
gain
a
deeper
understanding
about
their
shared
heritage
with
the
British
community.
It
also
served
the
reduce
the
social
isolation
of
these
ethnic
communities
and
to
help
them
acquire
critical
skills
such
as
interpersonal
communication
and
public
speaking.
After
participating
in
the
project,
beneficiaries
were
invited
to
attend
an
exhibition
detailing
the
findings
of
'Unforgotten
Soldiers',
which
gave
our
members
the
chance
to
enhance
their
sense
of
pride
and
self-confidence
by
talking
with
attendees
and
sharing
the
stories
about
the
contribution
their
ethnic
community
made
during
WWI.
Furthermore,
the
project
aimed
to
raise
public
knowledge
about
this
salient
but
widely
unknown
aspect
of
WWI
history
and
to
change
British
attitudes
and/or
behaviour
towards
immigrants
and
the
resident
ethnic
communities by highlighting this shared heritage and reminding them of the decisive role colonial troops played during WWI.
To
accomplish
the
aims
of
the
project,
ICOH
undertook
a
series
of
activities
including:
(1)
organising
an
awareness
building
workshop
for
Hull's
black
and
minority
ethnic
(BME)
and
migrant
communities,
(2)
running
an
art
exhibition
for
the
general
public,
(3)
uploading
the
project
research
onto
the
ICOH
website
and
(4)
launching
an
online
gallery
displaying
rarely
seen
photographs of colonial troops in WWI.
