Our Project Approach

Focusing on colonial troops and labourers of Afro-Caribbean, Indian and Chinese origin, ICOH and our partners located a wide range of images produced during WWI including portraits and landscapes, sketches, photographs, and propaganda posters. These images depicted colonial troops and labourers carrying out work for the Allied forces and were shared with community groups representing the ethnicities of those depicted in the images in guided workshops run by ICOH, community and academic partners. Attendees were encouraged to use their knowledge of these heritages to assess the images while learning more about the wider context and the history in which these images were produced. This approach, which we call Stories Behind the Pictures, has proved effective in engaging a diverse audience and the general public in heritage projects.
