Launch Event

ICOH had a launch event at Canham Turner, University of Hull for the project. The event showcased the initial results of the project and invited everyone who had participated on the project, including workshop attendees, community group workers, and the Deputy Lord Mayor. Premiering our banner exhibition and short film to the audiences, there were also a number of presentations delivered by the community organisations and our academic partners. We wanted to offer an opportunity for all our participants to come together and share their ideas and stories, broadening their knowledge about this heritage and get to know about the achievements of other groups working on similar projects across the UK. Speakers included Garry Stewart (Director of Recognise Black Heritage & Culture), Lucy Moore (Leeds Museums & Galleries), Steve Lau (Chairperson of Ensuring We Remember Campaign), Koran Sahota (Believe in Me CIC), and Karen O'Rourke (National Museums Liverpool). The event concluded with interviews from our workshop participants who shared with attendees their thoughts about the project and the impact that Stories Behind the Pictures project had on their understanding of First World War history and of their own heritages.
