ICOH pays special attention to the development of individual skills and abilities. To accomplish this aim, ICOH provides general advice and referrals for job training and access to higher education by networking with local employment services, colleges and other training providers. ICOH also runs workshops on personal development, CV writing and further and higher education. In the future, ICOH plans to organise workshops on language, art, health and general education for children and adults. CV writing and job search workshop In order to improve the employability of Iranian newcomers, four two-hour workshops on CV writing and job searching were provided to 12 unemployed individuals. A quick survey from our beneficiaries suggested that producing a CV was the most serious barrier in accessing a job for newcomers. In order to deal with this issue, ICOH arranged CV writing courses which offered the required knowledge and skills to our beneficiaries to help them complete and personalise their own CVs. It also gave them advice and guidance on job interviews, further and higher education and general knowledge on jobs in the UK. 15 people enrolled on the programme, 12 attended and completed the course. Upon completion of the course, these 12 beneficiaries had completed their own personal CV. All participants reported their knowledge and confidence in searching for jobs in the UK had increased. Five participants found work within four weeks of completing the course, three participants enrolled in further education and one for higher education relevant to their future prospective jobs. Life in the UK and citizenship workshops Numerous beneficiaries have reported that they have difficulty passing Life in the UK and have asked ICOH to organise short courses that help them to prepare for the exam. The exam is designed to assess the knowledge and skills that immigrants have about the UK and to ensure that they will be able to become active citizens if they are granted British residency or citizenship. When creating the course, ICOH also wanted to take the opportunity to incorporate practical training on the general knowledge and skills required for UK citizenship into the workshop. In order to improve the citizenship knowledge and skills of Iranian newcomers, workshops included general knowledge on the Life in the UK exam and citizenship practice activities were organised. In improving citizenship skills and knowledge, ICOH sought to foster and ease the process of integration into British multicultural society.
